Good Handwashing Helps Keep Employees Healthy

By Terence O’Reilly, Jr. and Sean O’Reilly, Sr.

It’s a good time to revisit this advice: Washing hands and wiping surfaces will help keep your employees healthy. Use signs near sinks and verbal reminders – whatever works. Get on a soapbox, so to speak.

As many restaurants look toward re-opening in the summer or fall, handwashing is one of the best ways to keep viruses and infections from spreading in your workplace, combined with other recommended precautions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). TERMAC’s hand soaps, sanitizers and wipes can help keep your employees and the premises safer.

It’s always been important to wash hands in the workplace before and after handling food; after aiding a sick colleague; before and after treating a cut; after using the rest room; after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; and after touching garbage or taking out the trash.

In these challenging times, the CDC also recommends handwashing after touching an item or surface that could have been touched by others, especially door handles, light switches, cash registers, countertops, display cases, shopping carts, electronic keypads, and money. Handwashing also should be part of the food packaging and delivery process.

The CDC recommends a thorough washing under clean, running water (warm or cold). Lather your hands by rubbing them together, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub for at least 20 seconds, and rinse well. If you don’t have access to soap and water, hand sanitizer with greater than 60 percent ethanol or 70 percent isopropanol will do the job too.
